Embark on a journey with Isa, a passionate qualified runner and archologist, through Rome’s lesser-known treasures Madonnelle. These tiny shrines, Madonelle, often hidden in plain sight on street corners, offer a glimpse into the city’s deep-rooted popular devotion and the Marian cult’s influence.

Known as Madonnelle, these shrines date back to ancient Rome when the Lares Compitales—pagan deities—were tasked with protecting street intersections. Over the centuries, they’ve evolved into small works of art—ranging from oil paintings and frescoes to marble carvings and mosaics.

Though there are now around 500 across the city, they were once found in the thousands and often served as the only street lighting in pre-electricity Rome. This 5km tour, which can start from either Piazza Navona or the Spanish Steps, will lead you to these hidden gems, where every Madonnella, street, and monument tells its own fascinating story.

This is more than a run—it’s a journey into the city’s rich history, fascinating stories, and closely held secrets. This experience combines gentle movement with cultural exploration, making it ideal for all fitness levels—whether you’re an avid runner or simply seeking an active adventure.
