Dr. Baldassarre Giardina

Born in Bologna, Dr. Baldassarre Giardina, affectionately known as Balda, has lived a life shaped by his deep passions for music, history, and travel. With experiences living in cities like Florence, Zaragoza (Spain), Speyer (Germany), and extensive travels—from Africa to India, the USA to Australia—Balda’s journey has been as diverse as the music scene he explores.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Balda spent ten years as an archaeologist, contributing to major archaeological digs in Pompeii, Sardinia, Rome, Ravenna, and Tunisia, while publishing several academic works based on his findings. His vast experiences across disciplines have given him a rich perspective on cultural heritage, which ultimately led him to write Musica, a celebrated book that explores Bologna’s profound musical history and highlights the must-see places for music lovers.

As the son of Nardo Giardina, a renowned figure in the international jazz scene, Balda grew up immersed in the music world. Throughout his life, he has interacted with some of the most iconic musicians and singers, including Lucio Dalla and Gerry Mulligan. These encounters have deepened his connection to Bologna’s music scene, further enriching his knowledge and personal insight into the city’s musical history.
